Location map of Isle of Skye

Skye is the most spectacular and the most easily accessed of the Hebridean islands. Connected to the mainland via a bridge crossing from Kyle of Lochalsh, it is an extremely popular tourist destination and visitor accommodation can become fully let.

The scenery is dominated by mountainous and hilly terrain and an extremely irregular coastline, with several large peninsulas protruding into the sea, with large bays between them.

The jagged peaks of the Cuillin mountain range, rising from the sea in the middle of the island, and the Trotternish Ridge in the north, provide some of the most breathtaking scenery in the Highlands.

This rugged landscape produces a wet climate and rapid run-off of rainwater, from the rocky peaks and slopes, via numerous short spate rivers.

While most of these rivers will have a small run of salmon, the season is short and catches are low on most, with the exception of the River Snizort, where the fishing on the private beats is controlled by the Skeabost House Hotel.

Portree Angling Association have access to a stretch of the upper Snizort and also control fishing on a number of other rivers; all of which can be fished on a roving permit.

Portree AA controls fishing on most of the trout lochs on the east side of the Trotternish Ridge, plus a few lochs on the west side. There are boats on 3 of the lochs, including the well-known 'Storr Lochs' comprising Loch Fada and Loch Leathan. These are 2 roadside lochs north of Portree, each of which has several boats for hire. In addition to respectably sized wild brown trout, the club also stock Leathan with rainbow trout.

The remaining lochs, referred to as 'the Hill Lochs', can be fished from the bank on a single roving permit.

The Eilean Iarmain Hotel offers access to several lochs on the Sleat peninsula, on the south of the island, including Loch Barabhaig.
